When you’re picking out an infrared lamp for the bathroom, your first instinct might be to just grab the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. It’s really more about how much space you’ve got and how close you’ll be standing to the heat. Unlike a space heater that just warms up the air, these shortwave lamps beam heat directly onto your skin. That’s why getting the wattage right is the difference between a cozy morning and feeling like you’re standing too close to a campfire.
Matching the Power to Your Space
If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room, you don’t need a beast of a heater. A 400W to 600W lamp usually does the trick. It keeps you warm without turning the room into a sauna. Now, if you’ve got a big master bath, you’ll probably want to jump up to 800W or 1200W. Or, my favorite trick: install a couple of smaller lamps. It spreads the heat around better so you don’t end up with one “scorching” spot and a few cold corners. Just a heads-up—if you put a massive lamp in a tiny room, it’ll keep clicking on and off because it hits the target temperature too fast. That’s a quick way to wear out your equipment.
Water, Steam, and Safety
Since we’re talking about bathrooms, the waterproofing (that IP rating you see on the box) is a big deal. One leak or a stray splash of water and you’ve got a blown circuit.
