
Keeping Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Your Toes Warm)
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble. You’ve got steam everywhere and the constant risk of a stray splash of water. If you don’t get the engineering right, you’re looking at short circuits or, worse, a dangerous ground fault. Here is how we actually make these things safe.
The Battle Against Steam
You’ll see “IP65” thrown around a lot. In plain English? It means the heater is tight enough to keep out dust and can handle a jet of water without blinking. We don’t just hope for the best. We use high-temp silicone gaskets and sealed cable glands to lock everything down. The idea is simple: water should never, ever touch the internal wiring. Even if some steam manages to sneak past the outer shell, it hits a layer of heat-resistant polymers first. These materials are tough—they won’t warp or degrade even when it’s 60°C and humid as a sauna in there.
Stopping the “Leaks”
The real secret to a safe wet-zone heater is how we handle the insulation. We need to make sure electricity stays where it belongs and doesn’t wander over to the metal chassis. That’s why we use ceramic or reinforced polymer sockets for the lamps. These materials stop “tracking”—which is basically when moisture creates a tiny, invisible bridge for electricity to travel across a surface. We test every unit under full load to make sure there is zero current leaking to the ground. If your wiring isn’t backed up by a proper RCD (Residual Current Device), you’re just asking for the breaker to trip.
The Trade-offs
Now, here is the catch. When you seal a unit this tightly, heat can’t just drift away. It gets trapped. Because it’s IP65, the internal parts run a lot hotter than they would in a breezy garden heater. You have to make sure the surface you’re mounting it to can actually breathe and dissipate that heat. Otherwise, you’re basically slow-cooking your own wiring. And for the love of everything,check your grounding. A sealed unit is great, but it’s not magic. If a seal ever fails, the ground wire is the only thing standing between you and a very bad day. Make sure that metal chassis is bonded to a verified earth ground. Period.
