Let’s be honest: chicken coops are tough on gear. Between the damp air and the ammonia, most electronics just give up. We built our waterproof infrared heaters because we wanted a way to keep the birds warm without having to constantly fiddle with manual switches in the cold. But here is the tricky part. You can’t just plug a high-power heat lamp into a little smart hub and call it a day. You’ll fry the hub in seconds. To make this work, we use heavy-duty relays. Think of the smart hub as the “brain” and the relay as the “muscle.” The hub sends a tiny signal, and the relay does the heavy lifting, slamming the power into the infrared tube. It means you can just tap “Winter Mode” on your phone while you’re still in your pajamas, and your coop is suddenly a cozy sanctuary. One thing to keep in mind: infrared is different. It doesn’t heat the air; it heats the birds and the ground. If you use a standard wall thermometer, you’re just guessing. That’s why we suggest using waterproof probes right down where the flock is huddling. When the floor hits the right temperature, the system kicks off. It keeps the birds from getting too hot and saves your lamps from burning out because they aren’t running 24/7 for no reason. Now, a quick word of caution on the hardware. Waterproofing is non-negotiable—you don’t want a short circuit in a humid coop. But if you seal everything too tight, the heat can get trapped around the socket. Make sure your mounting bracket lets a bit of air flow around the connectors. You don’t want your wire insulation melting just because you were trying to keep the rain out. It’s a huge relief to stop guessing if the heat is working. As long as your coop’s wiring can handle the initial surge, you can just swap out those old, dangerous lamps for something you can actually monitor from your living room.
