
Stopping Glass from Snapping: The Truth About IR Tempering
If you’ve ever worked with quartz tubes or glassware, you know the nightmare. You spend all that time shaping a piece at high heat, only for it to snap the second it hits a cold spot. It’s frustrating. One wrong move during cooling and the whole part is scrap. That’s why we use short-wave infrared (IR) lamps for “instant tempering.” They’re just faster. Way faster than those old resistive heaters that take forever to warm up or cool down.
The Secret to Not Breaking Your Glass
The trick to avoiding thermal shock is all about speed. You need to be able to dial the power up or down in a heartbeat. We pair these lamps with SCR power controllers because they don’t have that annoying “thermal inertia.” With a standard heater, the element stays hot even after you flip the switch. Not with IR. The second you cut the current, the heat stops. Period. You can set up a specific heating curve so the quartz cools down evenly. This keeps the outside of the glass from shrinking faster than the core. No internal stress means no spontaneous cracks. It’s that simple.
The Catch (Because there’s always one)
To get enough heat into a small space for industrial work, we have to push a lot of wattage. It gives you that instant punch you need, but it’s hard on the gear. You can’t just run these lamps at full blast and hope for the best. You need a serious cooling system for the housing. If your reflectors get dusty or your airflow gets choked, the ends of the lamps will burn out. It’s a pain, but keeping them clean is the only way to make them last.
Getting it Running on the Floor
When you’re actually wiring these into your line, watch out for the vibration. Use connectors that can take a beating. And please, use high-temp lead wires. There’s nothing worse than the smell of melting insulation in the middle of a shift. These lamps usually drop right into most standard IR arrays. Just double-check that your voltage matches your transformer. If you get that wrong, you’ll blow the filaments before you even get started.
