Why we bother with the gold coating
It sounds fancy, but it’s actually about physics. We put a thin layer of gold on the quartz envelope to flip the way the heat moves. Instead of letting long-wave radiation wander off, the gold reflects it back into the filament and pushes out more short-wave energy. For you, that means the heat actually sinks into the glass faster. You get a punchier heat density right at the surface, which lets you move your product through the kiln a bit quicker.
The headache of going long (2m+)
Scaling a lamp up to 2 meters isn’t as simple as just making it longer. You start running into issues with voltage drop and—let’s be honest—fragility. We spend a lot of time obsessing over the wattage-per-centimeter. If we don’t get that ratio exactly right, the middle of the tube ends up running cooler than the ends. That defeats the whole purpose. Then there’s the power draw. A 2-meter element pulls a lot of current. Real-world installation (and what to watch out for)
Here’s the thing: quartz bows. At these lengths, the lamp can actually bend under its own weight. You can’t just slide these into a standard rack and hope for the best. You need heavy-duty supports and brackets that are aligned perfectly. If there’s a stress point, the lamp will find it. And please, be careful when you’re installing them. These gold-coated tubes are delicate. One wrong move, one accidental bump against the kiln wall, and your vacuum seal is gone. One last tip: the heat density is intense. Make sure your cooling fans for the electrical terminals are up to the task. If they aren’t, you’re going to end up with melted wiring, and that’s a day nobody wants to have.
