
Making Your Infrared Heaters Actually Smart
Most heaters just blow hot air around, which is fine, but infrared is different. It heats you and your furniture directly. It feels more like standing in the sun on a chilly day. But the real magic happens when you stop messing with manual switches and let your home do the thinking for you. Imagine waking up and just saying “Winter Mode,” and suddenly, you’re wrapped in warmth. No waiting around for an old radiator to slowly warm up.
How the magic happens
To get this working, you basically put a smart relay or a Zigbee controller between the heater and the power. Your smart hub sends a quick signal, the relay clicks, and the lamps glow. It’s nearly instant. You hit a button on your phone, and you feel the heat on your skin a second later.
Stopping the waste
Here is the thing: you don’t want to heat an empty room. That’s just throwing money away. Instead of trusting the clunky thermostat built into the heater, I like to use external motion sensors and temperature probes. You can set it up so the heat only kicks in when it actually senses you’ve walked into the room and it’s gotten too cold. If the room is empty, the heat stays off. Simple.
A word of warning on the hardware
Now, don’t make the mistake of plugging a powerful 2000W heater into some cheap $10 smart plug you found online. It’ll probably melt or burn out. Those little plugs aren’t built for that kind of heavy lifting. You need the heavy-duty stuff—a real contactor or a smart breaker that can handle the amperage. I’d suggest a dedicated 20A circuit so you aren’t tripping your breakers every time the temperature drops in January. Also, if you’re using a mesh network, just make sure your signal can actually get through the walls and the heater casing. There’s nothing more annoying than a “smart” heater that takes ten seconds to respond because the Wi-Fi is struggling.
